Best known, in railroad circles anyways, for the Durango and Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad, Don and Bernie recently travelled to Durango, Colorado where Soundtraxx is also based. Here they attended three days of courses on Soundtraxx DCC products. The lectures covered Sountraxx’s current selection of sound equipped DCC decoders, programming, and tips. Also included was one day of hands-on installation of decoders. One product that was well received was Soundtraxx’s new line of DCC mobile decoders. If you have ever tried to speed match a sound equipped A unit with a non-sound B unit, you know how hard it can be! These new mobile decoders are made to match the Sountraxx line-up of sound equipped decoders in motor & lighting performance. The bottom line is it is a very simple task to match those speed steps! First announced in February, these decoders shipped in July and are now available in our shop.

Of course, if you are in Durango, you have to ride the train! Unfortunately, due to mud slides, the trip did not go all the way to Silverton. But still very enjoyable!

Visiting Calgary for the Stampede? Need a break from all the farm animals? Why not take a drive to the mountains and do some rail fanning at Morant’s curve?

Nicholas Morant was a photographer for the Canadian Pacific Railway. This particular point on the mainline became known as “Morant’s Curve” as it was one of his favorite photo spots.

Directions:
NOTE: Morrant’s curve is located within Banff National Park & a park pass is required to visit.
Take the Trans-Canada highway to the Lake Louise turn off. Head up the mountain towards the ski hill and take your first right onto the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A). Travel about 4 km to the Outlet Creek viewpoint (the sign is only visible when traveling east).

GPS coordinates: N 51 deg 23.980 min W 116 deg 07.638 min

If you’ve made it this far, consider driving on to Field, B.C. where the highway follows the legendary Big Hill, replaced by the famous Spiral Tunnels. A viewpoint for the lower tunnels is easily accessed off the Trans-Canada highway, while the viewpoint for the upper tunnel is located about 2.5 km in on the Takkakaw Falls road. CP still maintains a yard in Field if you want to check out some rolling stock & locos.

Want to annoy your friends? Call it Morant’s Bend……..

Looking East at Morant's Curve

Morant"s Curve
